[give advice: Before you start copy-cat installing what has been written, first read thru it (all of it!), then follow the instructions. ] [open konsole] su mkdir ~/slicker mkdir ~/slicker/src cd ~/slicker/src svn co svn://svn.slicker.org/slicker/atuin/trunk atuin cd atuin [give advice: The default prefix gets set to '/usr/local/kde' if you don't have a '$KDEDIR' variable declared (check by doing 'echo $KDEDIR'). so, by default, everything will install into these directories: bin's => $KDEDIR/bin lib's => $KDEDIR/lib modules => $KDEDIR/lib/kde3 *.desktop => $KDEDIR/share/apps/slicker/cardapplets NOTE!: $KDEDIR == /usr/local/kde IF no $KDEDIR declared! Following these instructions will instead install it to your home directory. The reason for installing it here is to make it a bit more clear which files Slicker uses. This also allows you to control who gets to crash your computer :), because you never know what bug(s) you may encounter. You can always do it your way, just know what you're doing. If you don't take the above suggestion, make _sure_ you have $KDEDIR declared to get Slicker running; eg. 'export KDEDIR=$(kde-config --prefix)', or run configure with '--prefix=$(kde-config --prefix)' before you continue. NOTE!: declaring variables in console will not save them for 'next time', and you have to declare them again. If you want to permanently declare them put them in /etc/bash.bashrc or equal! ] make -f Makefile.cvs ./configure --prefix=$HOME/slicker make [give advice: NOTE!: if you don't follow the above suggestion make sure you are superuser when doing the "make install". ] make install [give advice: If you didn't follow the instructions above, and you let it install in the default location make sure '$(kde-config --prefix)/bin' is in your 'PATH', If you did follow the instruction above, you have to make KDE recognize '$HOME/slicker' is a 'KDE-dir', and that it should look there. NOTE!: You will need to be superuser to complete this. ] su kwrite /etc/X11/Xsession [give advice: Now all you need to do is add the following lines: 'export KDEDIRS=$(kde-config --prefix):$HOME/slicker' 'export PATH=$PATH:$HOME/slicker/bin' without the quotations marks! - as you normally would do, at the top the file (before the script starts!). NOTE!: In order for the new variable to be set, you have to restart X when you are done. ] cd ~/slicker/bin chmod 700 slicker [give advice: Now all you (must be the same user how installed it! xor root) have to do is pop open a console-window or run-command-window, and type 'slicker' If you are daring enough, you can also have Slicker start at Bootup/Login instead of Kicker. Do: mkdir ~/.kde/share/autostart cp $(kde-config --prefix)/share/autostart/*.desktop ~/.kde/share/autostart kwrite ~/.kde/share/autostart/panel.desktop and change the line that says: "Exec=kicker" to "Exec=slicker" restart X and have fun. ]
